CLEVELAND, Tenn. — The Bellarmine University women’s tennis team saw its five-match win streak stopped as Lee topped the visiting Knights 5-2 on Saturday.
One big highlight for Bellarmine (8-2) came at No. 1 doubles, as junior Ashley Jonathan registered her 100th career victory after she and senior Maggie Walroth notched a 7-5 win over Micaela Belen Maiz and Asia Grzegrzolka.
Jonathan became the seventh member of the 100-win club in the program’s history, with Walroth among the distinguished group.
Junior Jennifer Skonieczny won at No. 1 over Lee (8-2) in recording her team-high 14th singles win, while sophomore Aubrey Smith rallied from an 0-5 first-set deficit to win seven games in a row and then claimed the last eight points in the match in defeating Lauren Trammell 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5.
“We fought hard but we couldn’t quite match the energy of the Flames in our first outdoor match of the season,” Knights Coach John Mican said.
Bellarmine hosts Grand Valley State in a pivotal Midwest Region showdown at 10 a.m. Sunday.
