Antonio Cassano claims Chelsea target Barella is not worth price-tag

Former Italian international Antonio Cassano this afternoon revealed his opinion that Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella is not worthy of the rumoured 50 million Euro price-tag on his head.

Cagliari standout

Barella, a gifted Italian international, came up through the youth ranks of Serie A outfit Cagliari, before breaking into the club’s first team setup on a consistent basis during the 2016/17 campaign.

And the 21-year-old has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most highly-regarded youngsters in Italy.

Barella combines all of the key attributes of a modern-day midfielder, with the former Como loanee equally comfortable controlling the tempo of a clash through his wide-ranging of passing as he is breaking up the attacks of opposing sides with a crunching challenge.

Perfectly summing up the all-action stylings of the Cagliari star were his haul of 6 goals, to go along with 13 yellow cards and 1 red in Serie A last season.

Chelsea links

As such, unsurprisingly, Barella’s impressive form in his home country has certainly not gone unnoticed across Europe.

The 4-time capped Italian international has been heavily-linked with a move away from Sardinia this month, with Premier League giants Chelsea the outfit most persistently-touted as a potential destination.

Following Cesc Fabregas’ departure for Monaco, it is claimed that the Blues are ready to meet Cagliari’s 50 million Euro valuation of their star man.

‘It is madness’

However, one individual who feels as though such a fee would prove excessive is Barella’s fellow countryman Antonio Cassano.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sport Italia, Cassano, who lined out for the likes of Roma, Real Madrid and AC Milan over the course of his 18-year career, revealed his opinion that Barella’s hefty price-tag, despite his inexperience and unproven-nature at the top-level, is indicative of everything that is wrong with today’s game:

‘Unfortunately today football is going in a very wrong direction.’

‘Barella is worth 50 million euros? OK, so how much is Thiago Alcantara of Bayern Munich?’

‘He [Thiago] is young too. He is 27 years old. He is worth at least four or five times more than Barella.’

‘A player makes two good games. He runs right and left. Maybe he is also a player of quantities like (Napoli’s) Allan or Barella. And then he is worth immediately 50, 60, 80 million?’

‘For me it is madness.’
